Being a confident, independent and enthusiastic reader is key to being a successful learner. Phonics and reading are taught across the Foundation stage and KS1 using the Read, Write Inc programme. This is a nationally recognised scheme for accelerating phonics, reading and spelling. Children are individually assessed and grouped by ability. The groups are small which enable staff to ensure that all children are making at least expected progress. The lessons are delivered daily and are pacey. The underlining principles of Read, Write Inc are: purpose, pace, praise, perseverance, participation and passion. Daily reading takes place across KS2 through guided reading sessions. This develops children’s comprehension skills as well as applying their decoding skills.

Cross curricular reading is an important of a child’s reading development. We have two libraries that encourage our children to develop a love of reading. Teachers read aloud to children daily from high quality texts. Hearing stories and poems read aloud is an important element in developing children’s reading skills and love of reading. Children are able to take books home daily to share with their families and there is a reward system in place for reading at home. Each class has a dedicated reading corner where children are able to relax and read for pleasure. The school has strong links with the local library and we make regular visits.
