Movie Magic!

May 01, 2018

Falmouth Primary held a science masterclass today for a select few of our own children and pupils from another school.

We discovered some of the science that takes place behind the scenes in films.  Mr Barnard showed us how to make an object disappear by placing it in a liquid that had the same ‘refractive index’ as the glass itself.

We then created ‘tractor beams’, just like in Star Wars, by generating static electricity in a balloon and using this to attract a metal can.

We then made ‘hoverboards’, following a scene from ‘Back to the Future’, and Mr Barnard set us the challenge of extending this to a Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) train.  He didn’t think we’d be able to do it but we proved him wrong!

Finally, we watched a scene from ‘Harry Potter’ and used this to discover how ‘forced perspective’ is used to make actors look bigger than those they are sharing the screen with, just like Hagrid and also Gandalf in ‘Lord of the Rings’.
